5 Holiday Essentials

Everyone knows that going on holiday is an exciting occasion, however, there are a number of practical elements to consider before you go. In the spirit of making sure everything is in order before you head off into the sunset, read on to find out about 5 holiday essentials you should never forget.

Passport and tickets

It almost goes without saying that, when you’re going on holiday, you need to take your tickets with you. Also, if you’re going abroad, make sure you’ve picked up your passport before you dash out the door (and checked that it’s still valid!) and usually has at least 6 months before expiration left. The mad dash to the airport before you jet off is always stressful, but it definitely helps if you know you’ve got your tickets and passport to hand.

Travel insurance

Another essential holiday item is travel insurance. Buying holiday insurance may not be the most thrilling prospect in the world, but you definitely need it, even if you’re going on holiday in the UK as you never know what might happen. There are even different types of holiday insurance that you can buy depending on where you’re going and how often you travel. It doesn’t have to be an expensive extra either, a quick search of the web can yield a number of cheap holiday insurance options. A multi-trip policy for regular travellers is a really good option and, if you’re going to be taking part in any extreme activities while you’re away, it definitely pays to have specific insurance cover for them.

Money

You might already have paid for your holiday, but you won’t get very far without some cash, so make sure you’ve got plenty of the relevant currency before you go. Try putting at least some of the money into traveller’s cheques or an insured pre-paid card so if you lose it, you’ll be able to get it back much more easily than if you just took cash.

First aid and other necessities

There is a whole range of other little things that you should always take on holiday, from a small first aid kit to your EHIC card if you’ll be travelling in the European Union. These things might well come in handy so it’s always worth making sure you have the basics covered when it comes to health. A small pack that includes your first aid kit, any medication you take and other health information should be sufficient for most trips.

Entertainment

Finally, holidays are great but the weather doesn’t always do what you want it to, so take some entertainment for those unfortunately rainy days. Books, packs of cards and other games are all good options.

Kalkan Turkey Holiday Resort Profile

For holidays in Turkey that are a slight change of pace, the historic town of Kalken is a must visit. This enchanting Turkish holiday resort is one of the most stunning and beautiful locations along Turkey’s gorgeous Lycian Coast.

Kalkan is a Turkey holiday destination with a difference because it has not become a centre of mass tourism like other Turkish resorts, but remains a charming, unspoiled haven of lush nature, crystal clear, bright blue water and plenty of historic architecture, like many traditional holidays in Turkey. Untypical it might be, but Kalkan is still a magnificent choice of venue for your next sunny Turkey holiday.

The Mediterranean resort and fishing town of Kalkan is more sophisticated than many Turkish holiday resorts and may appeal to tourists looking for holidays in Turkey which offer more than simply sun, sea and sand. It has been likened to Tuscany and the Dordogne. While not overrun with mass Turkey holiday tourists, Kalkan does have a faithful base of repeat holidaymakers, who after experiencing a Kalkan-style Turkey holiday just have to do so again and again.

Kalkan wraps around a historic harbour, sheltered at the foot of the epic Taurus Mountains. The town overlooks a beautiful bay dotted with islands. It is a special place, with a unique, small town atmosphere with breathtaking, architecture and artwork.

While Kalkan is beautiful, its main economy does not come from tourism and so the local residents take greater care and attention with the town’s historic preservation. Visitors are almost transported into Turkey’s varied and colourful cultural history. Kalkan’s distinctive Ottoman Greek architecture is protected by strict building codes which keep the small town architecturally uniform, retaining its historic heart.

Many excellent restaurants and bars contribute to the unique atmosphere here. Dining has long been a way of life in Kalkan and the local cuisine is testament to this. For holidays in Turkey with a unique flavour and authentic atmosphere, choose Kalkan for your next Turkey holiday. If you do, we guarantee it will not be the last Turkey holiday you spend there.

Legends Of Yogyakarta!

Yogyakarta province is one of the most densely populated areas of Indonesia. The city came into being in 1755, after the division of Mataram into the Sultanates of Yogyakarta and Surakarta (Solo). Gamelan, classical and contemporary Javanese dances, the wayang kulit leather puppet theater and other expressions of traditional art will keep the visitor spellbound. Local craftsmen excel in the arts of batiks, silver and leather work.

In the middle of south Central Java lies the magical region of Yogyakarta, the cradle of Javanese culture and tradition. In the north the volatile, Mount Merapi the Fire Mountain with captivating physical beauty stands vigorously guarding the surrounding nature.

This gigantic volcano, sometimes dangerous with its eruption and lava spitted from its crater, but at the same time gives tremendous fertility to the land. That’s the reason why the farmers inhabitants living in its slope do not want to leave their ancestor’s place of birth. They have a mystical relation with Merapi to live in harmony with ‘the rulers’ of the mountain to keep them safe and peaceful.
It disclosed that the name Jogja, instead of Yogyakarta or Yogya, is used as a promotion to market Yogyakarta since Y is a difficult alphabetical start for most international audiences -both reading and spelling. While Jogja is easily pronounced as JOG-ja, even JOG could be used as nickname.

Yogyakarta is known for its silver work, leather puppets used for shadow plays (wayang kulit), and a unique style of making batik dyed fabric. It is also known for its vivid contemporary art scene. Yogyakarta is also known for its gamelan music, including the unique style Gamelan Yogyakarta, which developed in the courts.

Water Castle

Built in 1758 by Sultan Hamengkubuwono I just west of the kraton, part of this pleasure garden and castle is at present no more than an intriguing collection of ruins, pools, arches and underground passages enclosed by massive walls, however, the central courtyard with the nymph-baths has been restored.

The Water Castle is located in the older part of the city within walking distance from the Bird Market. A number of batik workshops line the avenue leading to the pleasure garden’s entrance.

Imogiri

Imogiri is the official cemetery of the royal descendants from Yogyakarta and Surakarta. The royal graveyard is located on a hilltop, reachable by 345 stone steps leading to it.

Imogiri is about 17 kms southeast of Yogyakarta and easily accessible by bus or car. The tombs are built within three main courtyards.

Entry into the smaller courtyards housing the tombs of the princes is allowed only on Monday 09.00 – 12.00 or Friday 13.00 – 16.00. Traditional Javanese dress has to be worn, which however can be hired on the spot at a modest fee. The cemetery is closed during the Moslem month of Ramadhan.

Lake Champlain – 5 Ways To Enjoy This Great Lake

Lake Champlain – 5 Ways To Enjoy This Great Lake

Lake Champlain is the largest body of fresh water in the U.S. after the Great Lakes, and at 120 miles in length and an average depth of 400 and 12 miles across, everything about it is impressive. But more impressive than its size is its unspoiled beauty. In a state already known for conservation and back-to-nature vacations, Lake Champlain is the secret destination for a growing number of New England vacationers.

Heres my pick of five destinations and attractions in the Lake Champlain region when you visit…

ISLAND HOPING VERMONT STYLE:

The northern half of Lake Champlain contains a wonderful patchwork of Islands. The largest of the Islands are interconnected with each other and the Vermont mainland by Route 2 in the south and Route 78 in the north. Following Route 2 from south to north will take you through the picturesque towns of South Hero, Grand Isle, North Hero, and Alburg just a few miles from the Canadian border.

The Lake Champlain Islands terrain is flat to gentle rolling hills, which means bicycling is a popular way to get around on vacation. In most areas youll have unobstructed views of Vermonts Green Mountains to the east, and New Yorks Adirondacks to the west.

BURLINGTON – LAKE CHAMPLAINS CITY

Though Montpelier is the state capital of Vermont, its largest city is Burlington, which sits on the shore of Lake Champlain, with the stunning backdrop to the east of the Green Mountains.

Activities in Burlington include ECHO, Vermonts world-class lake aquarium and science center on the waterfront, Lake Champlain Chocolates guided factory tour, where you can see these famous chocolates made right before your eyes, and The Ethan Allen Homestead and Museum. Complete your day with a train ride through the beautiful Champlain Valley on the Green Mountain Railroad. The train meanders through gently rolling green pastures to Shelburne and back.

CRUISES ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

Two cruise boats operate on Lake Champlain in the summer – “The Spirit of Ethan Allen III” accommodates 500 people and the “Northern Lights” has room for 150 guests. Both these boats leave from the docks in Burlington.

While cruising youll listen as tour guides discuss the Lake Champlain regions rich revolutionary past, the importance of the Native Americans of this area, and interesting facts about the Lake. But center stage on either cruise is the stunning views of the Islands and the surrounding mountains of Vermont and New York.

DIVING FOR WRECKS

If diving for wrecks is your passion then in Lake Champlain youve come to the right place. The Lake is considered by many divers to have the best collection of historic shipwrecks in North America.

Eight of these wrecks are preserved for the enjoyment of divers, and under the watchful eye of the Lake Champlain Underwater Historic Preserve. These wrecks offer a unique experience for northeast diving. The types of wrecks vary from a horse ferry to canal boats, with some located close to both the Vermont and New York shorelines of the Lake. Diving experience required ranges from beginner to advance.

For more information on these wrecks visit the Preserves site at www.lcmm.org.

LAKE CHAMPLAIN MARITIME MUSEUM

The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum is located near Vergennes, and is a marvelous way to experience the historical significance of the lake. The museum at Basin Harbor provides opportunities to step back in time as you explore a Revolutionary War gunboat, watch craftsmen use traditional shipbuilding skills, and learn about nautical life in the Champlain Valley during the conflicts of the 18th century.

The Museum is self-guided but has plenty of demonstrations for you to stop and view as you wander around.

STATE PARKS ON LAKE CHAMPLAIN

There are over 50 State Parks in Vermont, and the Lake Champlain area contains twelve of those state parks, and includes: Alburg Dunes, Knight Point, Sandy Bar, Burton Island, Grand Isle, Knight Island, North Hero, and Woods Island in the Lake Champlain Island chain. Other state parks on the Lakes shore are: Kill Kare, Kingsland Bay, Button Bay, and DAR.

Within these Vermont State Parks are opportunities for hiking, biking, camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, and swimming. The parks are a wonderful way to relax and enjoy the waters of the Lake for a day or longer, and to hike trails in between a swim and reading your novel.

Keystone Ski Resort Outback

The Outback at Keystone Ski Resort offers amazing views and so much more. The Outback Express is the only lift which services this beautiful region which includes the north bowl and some of the best tree runs in Colorado. Conquest and the victory chutes are on the north facing slope of the mountain. This means the snow will stay relatively soft which makes it a lot easier to make those important carves through the trees. When you get to the top of the Outback Express, go left and you’ll be guaranteed soft snow. If you go right on a sunny day, you’ll be skiing on crust.
The runs on the South facing side (right off the lift) are my favorite tree runs in Summit County. I suggest you wait for a powder day to experience the South side. The trees are so evenly spaced and the hill is at a favorable pitch. Out of: Breckenridge, A Basin, Vail and Beaver Creek, the Outback is my personal favorite place to ski in the trees.
The north bowl is accessible by snow cat, it only costs $5, which I believe is quite reasonable for such a beautiful view of the continental divide. If you are interested in free you can always hike the peak which only takes one hour. You can also hike about 15-minutes and still get a fresh line of powder. Each run from the 15-minute hike offers beautifully gladed forest with a long traverse at the bottom. If you are snowboarding, be sure to get speed at the bottom.
There is a great groomer which, runs right under the Outback Express ski lift. It has plenty of room for you to carve those gnarly turns. This run has a perfect pitch for moguls. Stay right at the top of the lift for a mogul field all the way down the right side of the groomer. These moguls are great to learn on. For the best skiing in Keystone make sure you head to the Outback. You won’t be disappointed.

Italy: The Art Of Good Living

Most peoples perception of Italy is that of style, a country whose taste for the good life is matched only by its panache. The food is full of flavour, created with a desire to serve nothing but the best.

Variety is the spice of life; kitchens all over the country try to outwit one another with new recipes, each one tastier than their neighbours.

But what drives the Italian people is their passion, their zest for life. Nowhere else is life lived with so much enthusiasm.

The boys cruise by street cafes in their open top sports cars looking cool, trying to catch the eyes of the girls. The girls drink their coffees, dressed to the nines in their Versace designer dresses and pretend not to notice. This modern day mating ritual continues endlessly.

Elsewhere in Italy, tourists flock annually to this culturally diverse country, making it the fourth most popular destination in the world.

The majority of holidaymakers fly into Rome and make a beeline for the Colosseum. Brought to life in the recent Hollywood epic Gladiator, the ancient ruin makes no less impression in real life. Built in 80 AD, this bloodthirsty arena became graveyard for many a brave soldier, thrown to the lions with no mercy.

Within the walls of Rome lies the Vatican. Though technically not part of Italy, it is in fact an independent state and the smallest country in the world. Considered by many to be Christianitys finest Renaissance church, St Peters Cathedral is a magnificent piece of architecture. Michelangelos Sistine Chapel is another must see, though you may have to compete with large crowds. It is advisable to book your visit beforehand.

High up in the mountains sits the beautiful little town of Assisi, overlooking Perugia. The 14th century fortress of Rocca Maggiore sits predominantly, once the sentinel guarding this proud city. It is the birthplace of St Francis and well worth a visit, provided you can negotiate the religious pilgrims.

In the north of Italy sits the vogue city of Milan. The town is famous for its fashion businesses and exquisite shopping. Indeed, the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele is believed to be the oldest shopping mall in the world.

The Biblioteca Ambrosiana holds sketches by Leonardo da Vinci amid its considerable resources of books and drawings. It is one of the main libraries of European culture.

Italian travel guide

Italy as one of the most ancient European civilizations is unknown to none. Italy had been the land of Roman Empire for long. Today the country has a rich history and tradition that speaks for itself and gathers tourists from all round the world. Italy is a place known for its wonderful cities and their archaic art and architecture. There are great Roman structures like Roman Colosseum and Pantheon; the Sistine Chapel, sculptures by maestros Leonardo, Michelangelo etc. and many more attractions that can make your vacation a dream come true.

A Walk through the Italian Cities-

The cities of Italy are quite popular across the globe. For instance the land of Julius Caesar i.e. the city of Rome also known as the Eternal City has an aura of exotic Roman art and architecture. Rome is famous for its architectural masterpiece of the Colosseum, the National Gallery of Ancient Art which in itself is a magnum opus and displays the work of Bernini, Raphael and Titan. The Capitoline Museums houses the complete history of Rome, the Gallery of Modern Art presents the 19th and 20th century at work by eminent artists and the Galleria Borghese museum in Rome has the largest art collection in the world.

The city of Venice seeks no introduction. It is the city where tranquility prevails and the beguiling art and architecture makes everyones day. The visitors are attracted by pulls like the Grand Canal, the museums such as the Museum of Modern Art and Museum of Oriental Art in the Santa Croce region of Venice, which put at parade the art work from countries like Japan, Indonesia and China. Also worth visiting are the Academy of Fine Art and the Correr Museum known for its Renaissance art.

The fashion city of Milan has always been inviting visitors. It is a primary economic and cultural center of Italy. Milan is popular for the Romanesque architecture in the Lombardy region of which Milan is a part; The Cathedral of Milan that is a paradigm example of Gothic architecture. The Milan museums include some of the fascinating museums in the world. For instance the Brera Gallery that presents the tour de force of geniuses like Raphael and Giovanni Bellini. You can also gaze at the awesome The Last Supper, Jesus and his disciples at the Piazza Santa Maria delle Grazie church.

Since the entire Italy is swarming with museums and art, the city of Florence too grounds few wonderful ones. The Uffizi Gallery which is best known for the art work of Sandro Botticelli Birth of Venus, Leonardo da Vincis strokes, and apart from these the Dutch, French and Spanish work of art it displays.

Besides this, Florence is thronged for its delectable cuisine, hill slopes and the oldest archaeologically significant region of this place i.e. the Tuscany region. One among the wonders of the world, the Leaning Tower of Pisa is nestled in the Italian town of Pisa in the Tuscany region.

The Vatican City is a center of attraction in Italy particularly for magnificent Sistine Chapel, designed by the architect Baccio Pontelli and feathers added to it by Bernini. The galleries of this Chapel present some of the exclusive art works-paintings and sculptures like run-of-the-mill, the archaic bronze statue of Apoxyomenos, Michelangelos sculpture The Pieta and so forth.

After these Italy has many other cities that have always been welcoming visitors with their pleasant surroundings and amazing art work.

So one should, in ones life time definitely bask in the glory of the skill of distinguished artists, painters and architects, no where else but Italy.
