London for a Weekend

Planning a weekend in London but dont know how to make the most of your stay? Dont worryhelp is at hand!

If youre in London for a relatively short stay then youll want to make sure that you see the best of the city here are a few tips on how you can have the best visit possible.

Firstly, plan ahead and make sure that you book accommodation that will best suit your interests. Youll probably fly in to one of the 3 largest airports (Heathrow, Gatwick or Stansted) but its probably best to book a hotel in a more central location, rather than close to any of the airports. Thats not just for reasons of noise each of the airports are a little way out of the centre, so booking a hotel in a more central location will leave you more time to enjoy your stay.

You should also book your hotel to suit your budget and your requirements. If youre intending to spend your days out sight-seeing and your evenings eating out or going to catch a show then it may be that youll barely be in your hotel. If thats the case, then why not opt for a slightly cheaper hotel and maximise your available budget by spending the money that you save on entertainment.

Theres plenty to see in London and the biggest problem that youll have will be narrowing down the options. Its worth getting a good map of the city, as youll find that a lot of the central locations are within easy walking distance this means that you can make better use of your time, as youll see plenty above ground that youd otherwise miss if you were on the Underground.

As an example, Buckingham Palace, the Cabinet War Rooms, the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey are all within easy walking distance of each other. That means that you can cover those attractions relatively easily. In fact, once you get to the Houses of Parliament, youll also be able to see the London Eye, which is also easily reached by crossing Westminster Bridge. Pre-book attractions where possible. When it comes to spending a weekend in a city, its important to be organised. Pre-booking attractions and pre-arranging routes around London may feel like a bore when youre sitting at home but it will save you plenty of time when you reach the city.

Theres plenty to do in the evenings, with the various London shows always being popular. The heart of Londons theatre land is to be found in Shaftesbury Avenue and youll also find plenty of eating options nearby (particularly in Soho and Covent Garden). Many of the top restaurants have websites, so you can pre-book these too before arrival in London, if a particular one has caught your eye. Many restaurants will offer pre-theatre menus: these are served before show times, ensuring that you can get a meal before heading off to the theatre.

To sum up, the key to having a great experience in London is to plan your stay in advance. Get a good map, find a centrally located hotel and pre-book as much as possible.

Lima – The Forgotten Peru Holiday Destination

When planning a holiday in Peru, many people stress that they are keen to “get out of Lima as quickly as possible” but while historically Lima has had a bad press, and while it may not be the most beautiful or the most easy city in Peru, you certainly aren’t short of things to see and do and the place has a real buzz about it. Indeed, for many people, Lima ends up being a real highlight of their Peru holiday.

Lima was founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro himself and became known as the “City of Kings”. From the early colonial period until the colonies won their independence, Lima was the capital of Spanish South America. The city was famous for its wealth and beauty and it rivalled most European cities for its cultural life. Unfortunately, the city was destroyed in a horrendous earthquake in 1746, with only 20 of the original 3,000 houses left standing. Although the city was entirely rebuilt, the new buildings were often more functional than before and what was undoubtedly one of the world’s great cities has almost entirely disappeared.

Today, Lima is a big, bustling city of about 8 million people and is a city of contrasts. It has everything from 17th century colonial architecture to glass-faced skyscrapers, tremendous wealth and obvious poverty. A common refrain is: “Peru is Lima, Lima is Peru” and it’s certainly true that you can find everything here: it’s the perfect place to start your Peru holiday.

In the centre (or Old Lima as it is often known) you can find some of the best colonial and neo-colonial architecture Peru has to offer. Hundreds of stunning colonial buildings line streets bustling with every type of person and business. As well some superb churches, museums and other public buildings, the busy streets lead to some tranquil squares where you can sit down and enjoy an Inka-Cola while you reflect on your holiday in Peru so far!

Although the centre has the best of the architecture, the cosmopolitan suburb of Miraflores is a great place to stroll around. Theres usually plenty going on in Parque Kennedy but if you fancy a slightly longer stroll then why not take a walk down to the ocean? Its about a twenty minute walk from the centre of Miraflores, down Avenida Larco to the Larcomar shopping centre, which is built into the sheer cliffs that separate Lima from the sea. If you walk north (turn right at Larcomar) along the coast for quarter of an hour, you will arrive at the Parque del Amor, where young Limeos traditionally come to court.

Barranco has been Lima’s seaside resort since the 1600s and at night it’s like a slice of Brighton transported to the Pacific! By day, however, it’s a trendy, bohemian kind of place where many of Lima’s artists live and where you can check out the coastal scenery from El Puente de los Suspiros (the Bridge of Sighs). Barranco is also Lima’s premier nighttime destination so if you fancy unwinding with a few Cuzqueas then this is the perfect place to start or end your holiday in Peru!

About 31km from Lima, Pachacmac is a huge temple/palace area originally devoted to the god of the same name. The site includes a partially-restored Temple of the Sun originally dating to 1350. The complex is huge and is a really valuable addition to your Peru holiday itinerary. It’s handiness for Lima means that you can squeeze it into any free time you have in the capital waiting around for flights.

All in all, Lima is too easily dismissed when considering where to spend time during your Peru holidays. It has something for everyone and there are some great sights in the surrounding areas as well. Above all, don’t forget that Lima never stands still, and those Peru holiday guidebooks from 5 years ago just might be behind the times…

Las Vegas The Luxury City

Though a bit heavy on the neon, Las Vegas is a true feast for the eyes. The skyline is amazing, with all of the sparkling lights and massive shapes competing for attention. Every hotel is striving to top the next one with its own unique theme, majestic entrances, rollicking casinos, delectable restaurants, and impressive entertainment. It can be said that Las Vegas does not have a boring bone in its body.

The marketing angle of the Las Vegas tourism board has gone from its old nickname, Sin City, to being touted as a family-friendly destination in the 1990s and back to Adults Only with its new tagline, What happens here, stays here. City advertisers want to attract people from all over the world to their own adult playground, complete with endless gambling, alcohol, food, and entertainment. It is billed as a kind of magical place that will cater to every need and fulfill every fantasy.

The hotels in Las Vegas are truly incredible to behold. They pay homage to other unique cities, like New York, Venice, and Paris, by recreating smaller versions of these cities. New York, New York hotel reconstructs the lively streets of Gotham. The Venetian hotel has a huge indoor canal complete with gondolas and gondoliers. The Paris hotel experience comes complete with a replica of the Eiffel Tower. There are tributes to other themes as well, including ancient Rome (Caesars Palace), Hollywood (MGM Grand), pirates ( Treasure Island), Arabian nights (Aladdin) and many more. Two of the nicest hotels with casinos in Las Vegas, the Bellagio and the Wynn Las Vegas Hotel, dont have specific themes besides that of opulence and luxury.

From the Rat Pack of the mid-20 th century to Celine Dion today, Vegas entertainment has always been a huge draw. Magicians, such as Penn and Teller, and Siegfried and Roy, entertain crowds with their amazing optical illusions. Comedians like Danny Gans and Carrot Top perform often in Las Vegas and are quite popular with their use of extravagant props and sight gags. Veteran Vegas entertainers, like Tony Orlando and Wayne Newton, still command packed houses night after night with their well-loved repertoire of musical favorites.

Shopping and eating are two more favorite past times in Las Vegas. Caesars Palace offers a world-class mall featuring a painted blue sky with clouds adorning the ceiling. The Venetian also has first class shopping with many designer brands. Most of the other hotels showcase several great shops inside their lobbies and host many more on their premises. When hunger strikes, there is no shortage of fabulous food. Las Vegas is no longer a place of $3.99 all-you-can-eat-buffets. World-renowned chefs Wolfgang Puck (Spago) and Emeril Lagasse have several excellent eateries in town and many of the prominent hotels boast other award-winning restaurants.

Of course, the most popular reason for visiting Las Vegas is for the gambling casinos. From the nickel slot machines to the rooms of tables reserved for those starting bets over $1000, there is a venue for every budget. Games such as craps, blackjack, and baccarat draw millions of people a year to try their hand at the tables, accompanied by attractive cocktail waitresses handing out free drinks aplenty. There are some success stories, but many more sob stories, when people arrive home from their jaunts to Las Vegas after playing against the casinos. Amateur gamblers who visit Las Vegas report that it is best to decide how much money to play with before starting, and stick with that limit. After all, Las Vegas is a fun destination for vacationing and conventions, and it has a lot to offer visitors when they practice some moderation in the gambling arena.

Lagos, Portugal – Casa Rosa and Joe’s Garage

If youre a budget traveler or backpacking Europe, Lagos is a cheap slice of paradise. Casa Rosa is the place for general sustenance, while Joes Garage is a place to let go.

Casa Rosa

Casa Rosa claims to be the haven for backpackers in Lagos. The more you travel, the more you know such claims are rarely true. With Casa Rosa, however, I can confirm the claim is true. This hole in the wall served heaping mounds of the food of the day for really cheap prices. It was packed with backpackers, which made it a good place to meet people and exchange war stories.

I havent been to Portugal for four years, so I have to attach a caveat to recommending Casa Rosa. When I first visited Casa Rosa in the 1990s, it was owned by a couple of Brits, who were apparently trying to sell it. I dropped in twice in subsequent years and they were still there and still trying to sell it. Whether this ever occurred, I cant really say so keep in mind there may be a new owner or the place may not exist at all.

Joes Garage

In every town or city, there is one underground night spot you just have to visit. Of course, you first have to find out about it and then figure out where it is. People in the know typically heavily guard this information. For years, Joes Garage has been such a place in Lagos.

The recommend attire for Joes Garage is a bathing suit, t-shirt and flip flops. The place appears to have no ventilation whatsoever and is insanely hot. Turning a negative into a positive, the owners have a strong water policy. Water shoots out of the ceiling, mouths of statutes on the wall and water guns expertly aimed by bartenders. If you were glasses, just leave them at home.

Joes is open from around ten in the evening until the hour you stagger out. It is located on Rua Primiero de Mayo, but dont bother writing that down. The place has so little signage that you could be standing in front and completely miss it. The best way to find it is to follow the late night crowd as they begin filing out of the bars around midnight.

Lagos is an ideal spot for budget travelers. The town is has beaches, nightlife and is cheap. Enjoy!

Italy – Romancing with a Romantic City

This interesting article addresses some of the key issues regarding travelling to Italy. A careful reading of this material could make a big difference in how you think about travelling to Italy.

There is no doubt that Italy is the most romantic place in the world. With its Victorian charm, old-worldliness and old-fashion atmosphere, it is not surprising that Italy is one of the top tourist destinations in the world.

What is great about the country is the fact that tourist spots literally litter every corner of this small country. There are monuments, piazzas, fountains, churches and museums. From its capital Rome to Venice, Tuscany and Florence, there will surely be something that will capture your interest.

Ancient Rome boasts of ancient structures like the Roman Imperial Forums, which includes the Forum of Caesar, The Forum of Vespasian, which is otherwise known as the Temple of Peace and of course the Forum Trajan, which has been greatly preserved even after several centuries. Overlooking the forums is the the Palatine Hills and the Palace Complex, where the greatest people in Roman history and Roman Empire lived.

Besides the complex is the Circus Maximus, which was historically famous for having been a venue for racing chariots. This is also where roman emperors kept the citizens entertained by filling their stomach with food and their eyes with circus acts.

Colosseum is another spot that you should not exclude in your itinerary. The collosseum, which can seat more than fifty thousand spectators, lie witness to a chapter in history where gladiators provided entertainment for a falling Roman Empire.

Is everything making sense so far? If not, I’m sure that with just a little more reading, all the facts will fall into place.

The Pantheon is another symbol of the Great Roman Empire. Commissioned by Hadrian, the temple boasts of a rotunda and a dome. This is actually part of the seven wonders of the Ancient World.

Another great architectural work is the Castel Sant Angelo, which is better known as Hadrian’s Mausoleum. More than just a tomb, this tourist spot provides visitors a panoramic view of the Tiber. In previous centuries, the Castel was also used by Emperors as passageways in times of danger. The popes of the Vatican were also able to use the tunnels as it connects to the Vatican. Speaking of Vatican, never forget to include St. Peter뭩 Basilica and the Vatican Museums in your list of places to visit. Although the Vatican is technically an autonomous state, going there is relatively easy and cheap when you are in Italy of course.

Palazzo dei Conservatori, a building constructed through the plans made by none other than Michaelangelo, and the Palazzo dei Museo Capitolino are two of the museums that you should visit. Both of these can be found in the Capitoline Hill, which was once a seat of power in the country. Even today, it remains to be the center of government.

Italy also has lots of Piazzas, one of which is the Piazza Venezia, where you will find the Palazzo Venezia, a museum quite famous for its collections of works of arts in the medieval and the Renaissance period. There is also a shopping district in the area of the Via del Corso is only an hour or two away.

Another beautiful piazza that you can visit is the Piazza Navona, where you will find a number of fountains including Bernini뭩 La Fontana. There is also the Church of Sant’Angese, which you will definitely admire for its architectural design.

The Piazza de Spagna, on the other hand, features the famous Spanish Steps or what is called the Scalinata della Trinita’ de Monti in Italian. The steps lead to the church in Trinita dei Monte.
Another tourist spot that you should not miss is the Trevi Fountain. Legend has it that people who manage to throw their coins inside the Fontana di Trevi will come back again to Italy.

Don’t limit yourself by refusing to learn the details about travelling to Italy. The more you know, the easier it will be to focus on what’s important.

Israel – The Pressures of Life

It’s a trait that makes this present generation of Israelis one of the best-looking on the planet. Asian features combine with European physiques and produce tall, strong young guys and women who turn a hundred heads every time they walk down the street.

But what’s more noteworthy is the melting-pot of traditions that this marriage of ethnic backgrounds represents. Although technically all of the same ancestral descent, the lives of Jews scraping a few carrots from the frozen soil of Poland were hugely different to those seeking a living in the crowded markets of Baghdad.

Every family brought with it the language of their country in which they’d been living along with the cuisine, traditions and attitudes of the place too. Israelis of Polish descent have the reputation to be deeply materialistic while those from North Africa are said to share the unpredictable nature and bigheartedness of their Arabic hosts.

After more than fifty years since the birth of the state, many of these differences have subsided in the search for a national identity. The younger generation have little time for the past suspicions that existed between Jews of European and Arabic descent and prefer to think of themselves to be Israeli before anything else.

But what is an Israeli?

In the beginning everyone had their own thought of what it should be. The religious saw the return of the Chosen People to their homeland as a prophesy fulfilled and hoped that the synagogues might soon be filled with religious Jews. Others simply saw Israel as a place to escape discrimination and intended to carry on with their lives as before but this time in more thriving conditions. The same can be said for the 1 million Russian immigrants who swelled the population by 20%.

But if what John Lennon said is true then ‘Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans’ and perhaps we are as much shaped by our environment as by our own choices. And it seems to me that this is the case with the Israelis who spend most of their lives trying to fight for their right to exist. But their day to day struggles are not with the Arabs or Palestinians but rather with each other. And this is the first indication in understanding their national identity.

In lieu of an anti-semitic population to make their lives hell, the Israelis seem to intent on making life as taxing for each other as they possibly can. Whether in business, family or friendship, Israelis flourish upon stress and forever push for an extra inch. It’s almost as though it were some kind of national decision to keep everyone in fighting fitness.

The typical image of the Jewish mother is more than just a myth and the whole family will wield every last ounce of emotional blackmail to urge their children onto success. Countless times I’ve seen some smooth young guy in jeans, t-shirt and shades, hanging out on a street corner looking cool until he answers his mobile phone – his brow furrows, his eyes raise to the sky and within twenty seconds of listening to the rant of complaints from the other end of the line he raises one hand to the sky and shouts:

“Mother!” Of course the fussing only comes from a loving heart but it’s part of an Israelis education that if he wants to be heard he must yell. And not just in the home – an Israeli friend of mine described to me her first day at school when she moved to Israel as a child.

“There were thirty of us in the classroom and we were all very eager about our first day. The teacher came in and put twenty-five biscuits on the table. Then he invited us all to come and take one. Me and a few other kids didn’t push hard enough to reach the table in time and had to watch all the others enjoy their biscuits.

“‘You see?’ the teacher told us, ‘If you don’t fight for what you want in this life then you’ll end up with zero!’”

These lessons extend to the workplace and business. Israeli employers haven’t quite grasped the notion that workers deserve to be paid for the time that they’ve worked. One friend of mine waited two months to be paid for a weekend that she spent as a waitress in a cafe.

“Every time I called my boss he gave me some reason or pretended that the battery on his phone was dead. Finally I just walked into his office with a hammer in my hand.

‘Either you pay me now,’ I told him, ‘Or I’m gong to smash every window in this place!’

He gave me this very disillusioned look and told me that he’d have to pay me out of his own pocket – like I could care less! But I got my money.”

So this is possibly the first part of understanding the people : Israelis are people who fight for what is theirs. And boy, do they know how to fight.

India Tour Packages – An Ultimate Holiday Packages

India’s tourism industry is thriving due to an increase in foreign tourists’ arrivals and greater than before travel by Indians to domestic and abroad destinations. The visitors are pouring in from all over the world: Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia. At the same time, the number of Indians traveling has also increased.

India is probably the only country that offers various categories of tourism. These include history tourism, adventure tourism, medical tourism (ayurveda and other forms of Indian medications), spiritual tourism, beach tourism (India has the longest coastline in the East) etc.

India is the birthplace of this 5,000-year-old science. The many Ayurveda resorts in India are located in various scenic locations of the country, from Ananda in the Himalayas to the many resorts in the picturesque backwaters of Kerala. Ayurveda is the system of traditional medicine in India. It is based on many centuries of experience in medical practice, handed down through generations. Composed of two Sanskrit words, “Ayu” or life, and “Veda” or knowledge, Ayurveda is regarded as “The Science of Life” and the practice involves the care of physical, mental and spiritual health of human beings.India is also the birthplace of the concept of Yoga and Meditation, practices that are becoming increasingly relevant and popular in the context of today’s spiritual aridity.

India is a land of inherent spirituality and people have been known to travel here to find solace in its ancient wisdom since time immemorial. India is called the “yogabhoomi” and the gateway to the heavens. Innumerable saints and seers, in their quest for knowledge, have contributed largely to the development of various religious monuments viz. Temples, Mosques, Monasteries etc. built lavishly across the length and breadth of the country. The kind of cosmopolitan existence India has is best reflected in its pilgrim centres. Religion is the heartbeat of the nation and the followers of all the major religious and sects, viz., Hinduism, Islam, Buddhism, Jainism, Zororastrianism have lived here for centuries. Together has come up temples, mosques, gurudwaras, churches, synagogues and religious and spiritual centres. On the West, you can see the amazing rock cut temples of Ajanta and Ellora near Aurangabad and the Sai Baba Temple at Shirdi.

For untold centuries, the powerful triad of the sun, the sea and the sand have pooled their resources to present spectacular effects and memorable experiences to a cross section of people from all over of the globe. India has almost a 6,000 km long coastline, which is home to some of the finest beaches in the world. Both the West and East Coast of India offer verdant vistas of palm on the Arabian Sea shores or the Bay of Bengal. On the west coast there are miles of sandy beaches broken into attractive bays by rocky headlands. The most popular ones are the beaches of Goa and Kovalam at Kerala. The beaches on the eastern coast are less well developed. The best known are the beaches of Mahabalipuram and a small but exquisite beach in Orissa called Gopalpur-on-Sea.

The Travel and Tourism industry holds tremendous potential for India’s economy. It can provide impetus to other industries, create millions of new jobs and generate enough wealth to help pay off the international debt. That is why we have included Tourism amongst the Core Sectors of the Indian Economy.

Athens is known as the birthplace of democracy. This ancient city was home to the Greek philosophers like Aristotle, Plato and Socrates. Named after the goddess Athena, Athens is one of the most famous cities in the world, and one of the oldest. As a city state Athens figured prominently in ancient history as well as myths and legends of the ancient world. The Greek capital, now home to three and a half million people, has been called the cradle of civilization due to the many achievements of its culture. When the Roman Empire split into Eastern and Western halves, it was the Greek half of the empire, the Byzantine Empire of Constantine, which lasted far into the middle ages. Greece is truly a country to enjoy and to learn from, and the most enjoyable way to learn about Greece is through a vacation, with lodging in a private home.

Have you heard about Hvar Island?

Hvar Island is situated in the Adriatic Sea and belongs to Croatia. The island spreads out on 80 km from west to east and it is truly paradise for its tourists. People all over the world visit all four major parts of the Hvar Island as its surprises are many and diverse.

During its existence, the Hvar Island was know by other names also, depending on what culture it belonged to. First it was known as Pharos and after that it was called Piteyeia (around the third century B.C.) as we know from the Greek poet Apollonius of Rhodes. While it was under Roman rule it was called Pharia and later Fara. The Slavs, people that occupied the island during the middle ages, named the island Hvar. Even if the island was under Slav occupation, a lot of the inhabitants were Roman-speaking and convinced the Slaves to change the official name once more, this time into Quarra. In the eleventh century the Italians changed the name again into Lesina (meaning forest), a word full of meaning because at that time the island was perfectly characterized by a woody terrain. This name was kept until the nineteenth century when it was changed back into Hvar Island.

This place exists nowadays under the name of the Hvar Island, but the Hvar Culture has long been extinct. It is said that this culture existed from the year 3500 to 2500 B.C. The Hvar Island is an important piece in Croatian history being one of the important literary centers of this country during the Renaissance. Nowadays it is known as a producer of lavender, honey and wine and these aspects can be charming to those interested in stimulating their senses. Because of its climate and unique position, the Hvar Island is home to a lot of different species of flora and fauna like the Croatian Fighting Toad. An interesting fact about the Hvar Island is that it gets 2800 hours of sun per year. As you can see, there is no possibility for anyone to get bored on this island because it reunites history and culture for those with this kind of interests and it can be a great place to relax by bathing in the sun and admiring nature.

There are many cities to visit on this island, each with its own story and appealing characteristics. The town of Hvar had a population of little over four thousand people in 2001.
